About this place
The Kerala backwaters are one of India's signature slow-travel experiences. Around Alappuzha, Kumarakom, and Vembanad Lake, travelers move through canals, paddy fields, coconut groves, fishing villages, temples, churches, and bird-rich wetlands by houseboat, ferry, canoe, or homestay. The best visits use a lighter touch: short cruises, village walks, local meals, and smaller waterways rather than treating the backwaters only as an overnight houseboat photo stop.
