Hemis Monastery is a major spiritual anchor in Ladakh and the headquarters of the Drukpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. Re-established in the 17th century, the monastery is known for its giant copper-gilt statue of Lord Buddha, ancient thangkas, and its impressive assembly hall. It is most famous for the Hemis Festival, held in early summer, featuring colorful cham (masked dances) that celebrate the birth of Guru Padmasambhava.
