Varanasi, also called Kashi or Banaras, is one of India's most powerful pilgrimage destinations and one of the country's most memorable city experiences. The riverfront ghats shape the visit: pilgrims bathe at sunrise, priests perform evening Ganga aarti, cremation ghats make the cycle of life visible, and narrow lanes lead to temples, sweet shops, silk weavers, music houses, and old markets. It is intense, sacred, and best approached with patience rather than as a checklist stop.
