First-Time India Icons Route
A compact first-trip framework for India's best-known places without trying to cover the whole country in one journey.
Overview
India is too large for a single best itinerary. A sane first route should choose a strong spine and leave whole regions for later. The classic starter shape links Taj Mahal and Agra, Jaipur, and either Delhi or Varanasi, then adds one slower contrast such as Kerala Backwaters, Goa Beaches, Pondicherry, or a desert experience in Jaisalmer.
Suggested Route
Days 1-2: Delhi or Mumbai
Use Delhi or Mumbai as the arrival buffer. Keep the first day light, especially after a long flight. Focus on one or two heritage zones, food, and practical setup.
Days 3-4: Agra
Travel to Agra for the Taj Mahal at sunrise or late afternoon. Add Agra Fort and Mehtab Bagh rather than rushing onward the same morning.
Days 5-7: Jaipur or Jaisalmer
Give Jaipur enough time for the old city, Amber Fort, markets, Jantar Mantar, textiles, and food. Alternatively, head deeper into the Thar Desert for the golden fort and dunes of Jaisalmer.
Days 8-10: Varanasi or a slower contrast
Choose Varanasi for pilgrimage, river life, and old-city intensity. Choose Kerala, Goa, or Pondicherry if you need slower water, coast, and recovery time. For high-altitude landscapes, Ladakh remains the anchor.
